Pelješac is the second largest peninsula of Croatia, situated in the south of Croatia, in the Dubrovnik – Neretva district. Pelješac is divided into four administrative counties: Orebić, Janjina, Ston and Trpanj. Orebić is the biggest of the four, it settled under St. Ilija hill, and it can be reached by a ferry from the town of Korčula and by land, the road goes from Ston through the whole peninsula.
Orebić is a picturesque town, home to the many captains and sailors whose rich tradition can be seen at the Maritime Museum. The town of Ston is divided to Mali and Veli, meaning small and big, there are a number of buildings from the medieval times, visitors find them very interesting. Ston is also home to the Saltworks Ston, founded by the Dubrovnik Republic, it is the oldest saltworks that is still in function and produces salt. Ston is, we can say, similarly built to Dubrovnik, it has its Rector’s Palace, Bishop’s Palace, the Town’s Guard, a cathedral, Minceta and main street.
After Ston, comes Trpanj, the oldest town on Pelješac, it is a historical and fishing town, with spring water, rich Mediterranean vegetation, and ancient renaissance palaces. It also has excellent wine cellars, rich hunting grounds, fish, clean beaches surrounded by pine wood. Then there is Janjina, an inland settlement of Pelješac, under Gradine hill, its main economy being agriculture, vineyards, and olives.
